If Only I Could Talk: a Canine Adventure Kindle Edition

Trapped in a house fire, Nelson is dying.
If only he could open the door …

Nelson whimpers his final goodbye to Rascal, his canine soulmate, their paws almost touching through the heavy glass that separates them. Succumbing to the smoke, his life drifts slowly before him …

Nelson was born deep in the French Alps, where his only worries were how snow could be both soft and hard and why it made the house sink. And whose turn it was to fetch the baguettes from the boulangerie.

So how could puppy love be so cruel? And how ever did he find himself lost and lonely in England?

His dogged wanderings eventually led him to David and his son Timothy, a young boy with autism. Life was once again full of joy.

Until now, trapped in the fire, Nelson’s luck has surely deserted him. But he can’t die yet! He has an amazing tale to tell – and an amazing tail to tell it with. And with Rascal there to help, Nelson has no choice but to survive.

"If Only I Could Talk" by Tony Lewis is unquestionably a heart-tugging and insightful story about one very personable dog, the people and canines he encounters during his life's journey, and the lessons he learns along the way. Told in a series of flashbacks, beginning with Nelson being trapped inside a burning house, we are introduced to this philosophical and resourceful dog and quickly grow to love him as he reflects on his memories. Born in the French Alps and adopted by a loving family, Ombre (as he was named by the Moretti family) learns to live with humans in typical puppy fashion: trial and error, and a good bit of mischief. He learns to fetch bread from a local market for his people, using a special harness like contraption strapped to his back. While he does well with the bread, the attempts to have him fetch meat from the butcher did not meet with as much success. Still, despite his occasional mistakes and canine capers, he is loved, pampered, and allowed to roam and explore and grow. He forms friendships with the local dogs, and even falls in love. But fate and human whims intervene, and his family uproots him and moves to another region of France. While there, on a fateful day at a large nature park, Ombre's penchant for the lady dogs leads him far from his family, and he is lost from them forever.

After a series of misadventures, including being chained by a cruel man and beaten, finding himself stuck in a dog pound, and then hitching a ride in a truck to England...Ombre eventually stumbles upon a park where he decides to live for awhile. It turns out the "park" is a cemetery, and is frequented by a young widower, David, and his autistic son Timothy. Ombre and Timothy become friends, and eventually David allows the boy to take the dog home, where they name him "Ozzy" (after the rock music star) and life settles into a peaceful routine again. Ozzy makes himself useful to David by being an example of a "rescue dog" and going with him to various institutions and charities to pitch giving money to animal shelters. He enjoys his life, and the love of his new family.

But fate and human whim intervenes again, and after an incident which threatens his very life, Ozzy finds himself abandoned and alone; only to land, quite literally, in the car of an elderly couple. Which brings us back to the fire, and the strange series of events that come together to show Ozzy..now named Nelson..the pattern of his days, and the purpose and meaning of his life.

This is a contemporary book written by a contemporary Englishman, so for some United States readers, some of the decidedly English colloquialisms and speech patterns might be unfamiliar. Yet, as one gets used to it, it makes sense. Each of the characters has a distinct "voice" and way of expressing themselves, and the way they speak is a part of the fabric of the story.

I came away from reading this book sad to see it end. Ombre-Ozzy-Nelson brought to the world so much love and laughter, and, as it always is with life, sadness and regret. His story makes me see my own canine companions in a new light..and with a new understanding. A very worthwhile and recommended read for anyone, whether they are dog enthusiasts or not.

This is THE best book I have read for years! Its sad, funny, heartwarming, moving, a wonderful tale of a dog, and his adventures in his life. The way the book is written, ie that its the dog telling the story is absolutely fantastic. Have a box of tissues ready! I promise you wont read this book without shedding tears! I couldnt put it down once I started, and have read it twice already. I certainly hope that Tony Lewis writes more books. He certainly is a talented writer.

This was a really good story! Ombre/Ozzy/Nelson the dog tells the story of his life - heartwarming, funny, and sad in turn.

Tony Lewis really gets the canine characters and makes them come alive on the pages. If a dog could talk, he'd probably sound just like this!

Anyone who has ever owned or loved a dog would enjoy this book. Check it out!

I really enjoyed this story, it was so very touching. How Nelson acted right before he passed reminds me of how my dog acted right before he died. Thank you for writing this book, because I feel all dogs feel that way, "If only I could talk."

October of last year, 2013, I suffered an accident that left me with expressive aphasia. I was left confused for many, many months. unable to speak, write or read properly. slowly through help of my family, friends, especially God, I have begun to speak more clearly, write, but most importantly, I have begun to read again. it takes me about three times longer to finish a book, but I don't mind, my fear was never to be able to read ever again. if only I could talk is first book I have read since my accident, not only did it help me therapeutically, but it enlightened my soul. it helped me to love again, to love myself again, to know that there is always hope. this book is so beautifully written, it's an amazing book. it should be in everyone's bucket list. I feel I love my dogs even more now, understand them more now. thank you Mr Tony Lewis for writing from your heart. I would love to meet Mr Lewis and personally thank him for helping me overcome such a terrible, depressing time in my life with this one little book!!

This book will be a delight to most dog lovers (of which, yes, I am one, and hence favorably prejudiced). It is a dog's perspective on his highly varied life, through all kinds of experiences, challenges and owners (who he comes to regard as "guardians"--very appropriate). The final segments, in which he meets up again with a prior owner, and in which he discovers that his best canine buddy (also, conveniently, a neighbor), is actually his son by Belle, the canine love of his life, are a bit overly contrived, but the tale is full of those fun things that make people into dog lovers. There is one scene of immense poignancy, when the autistic son of one of his owners (the same one he meets again later), believing that his canine pal was about to be put down, insists on saying goodby to him. I had tears running down my face, and that almost never happens with me when I read a book. This is a great story, though slightly flawed, and well worth reading.

I loved this story though I sat sobbing for almost the whole of the final chapter and had to come in from the garden where I was reading it, so the neighbours didn't think I'd totally lost the plot !! I knew, being a doggy book, that there were bound to be sad parts but over all this was an uplifting story, this dog had a pretty good life. He teaches us plenty of lessons along his journey as well, especially as how easy it can be to look away for a few minutes and you can lose your precious pet !!
It's so well written and presented as well. You expect with a self-published offering that's it going to be full of mistakes and it isn't so publishers need to take note. I buy too many supposedly best-sellers full of errors which is pretty appalling. There were NO mistakes in this at all.
Our doggy narrator is a funny one. He had me chuckling a great deal as he related his story and his thoughts to us. I especially liked his Timothy he met and lived with. If he had to tell us, I think he'd have been his favourite person of all those he encountered throughout his life. He certainly lived with a varying cast of owners, though. I greatly enjoyed his relationship with Belle as well....that was lovely.
It has a smashing cover and it is this face I picture throughout. If you're a doggified person as I am, you're sure to love this story.
