Way of the Warrior (The Philosophy of Law Enforcement) 6th Edition, Kindle Edition

4.2 4.2 out of 5 stars 337 ratings

The Best-Selling Criminal Procedure, Criminal Law, and Forensic Science series!

No holds barred law enforcement philosophy

Whether you're a hard luck grunt working the street or a white shirt administrator who'd need a GPS to find it, Way of the Warrior is for you.
A sixteen year veteran of patrol, investigations and narcotics work, as well as a second-generation cop, best-selling author Bernard Schaffer has something to say about the True Blue Line.
Equal parts biography and instructional guide, Way of the Warrior focuses on the core of the individual officer: the warrior spirit. It discusses how to successfully uphold the law and not lose your mind in the process.

From the author: "The police are a modern warrior society. We're protecting the homeland and families from every threat conceivable, doing it on rotating shifts that interfere with our home lives and physical well-being, and facing insidious politics in the process. The Job is far more than just carrying a badge and a gun. Way of the Warrior is my perspective on what it means to serve and protect. All the emails I get from cops around the world tell me I'm not alone, and if you're reading this, neither are you."

WINNER of the Audiobook Reviewer's Choice Award! (Nov 2017)"A good cop's look at his world. This essay shines a light on the very soul of police work, honestly and succinctly. I carried a badge for 29 years. Many of my thoughts during those years are the same thoughts in this essay." Mike M., 29 year veteran (Amazon)"Did wonders for me. It relit that fire inside me that was starting to flicker." Koncrete Kombat, 10 year vet (Amazon)"I believe every police officer should read this book and I recommend every supervisor also read this book, they could learn a lot from it." Harvey L. Macy, Federal Police Officer (Amazon)"I work for one of the largest most published police departments in the US. Everything Mr. SCHAFFER talks about rings true no matter what police department we work for!!!!!!" Ryan Shaffer, Police veteran (Amazon)"I'm in my eleventh year on the streets of law enforcement and Mr. Schaffer is dead on." Chris Hampton, 11 year veteran (Amazon)"Informative, inspirational." James Elliot, Retired LEO (Amazon)"What I read was so true and a reinforcement that it's not just my agency with the issues. This was an outstanding read, and I will be suggesting it to our training staff as a must read, at least for the newer officers coming out for patrol training." Anonymous Reviewer, Police Veteran (Amazon)

From the Author

Live from the True Blue LineAn interview with Bernard Schaffer Q: You're a successful fiction author, writing in multiple genres. What made you want to write Way of the Warrior?A: It appealed to me as an author because I've always enjoyed writing essays, but there simply isn't much of a market for them. Way of the Warrior gave me the opportunity to communicate something I feel very deeply about to a new audience. Q: And as a cop? A: Well, every day I read about some police officer in some part of the world who did something horrible. That's big news and it generates a lot of attention. The other side of the equation isn't equally represented, if at all. I've been a police officer over fifteen years, and my dad joined the force when I was baby. I've been surrounded by this life for as long as I can remember. I've seen more acts of bravery, kindness, commitment, and honesty than could ever be recounted. I wrote Way of the Warrior for the cop who is missing their kid's birthday party, sitting in a patrol car, wondering what the point of this all is. I wrote Way of the Warrior to reach out to that one cop who is secretly thinking about giving up and saying, "Forget all the politics in your department and the meaningless petty nonsense. We need you. You are a warrior, and we desperately need you."  Q: The book also contains some investigative advice, or golden rules, as you put it?A: There's a need for clear, concise, and easy to use information. Not everyone can find training, or has the means to seek out a knowledgeable person. I have been extremely lucky to learn from incredibly talented investigators. Everything you see in WOTW was passed down to me from them, and probably to them from someone else, and it's lasted this long because it is all true, and it all works. Q: The reviews certainly seem to agree that it works. A: The reviews, which I always read, the emails, which I always respond to, and the phone calls I get all tell me that the True Blue Line is alive and well. Despite everything that has happened in the country over the past several years, all the attacks and catastrophes and national incidents that break our hearts, I am here to say that the boys and girls in blue are as strong and committed as ever. We are the modern warrior society, and it's an honor to be part of it.

Kindle version has some great and up to date info (21 July 2016). His perspective on the black lives matter movement really made me think hard on what it all truly means. I am not in law enforcement, though I am a senior in college pursuing Criminal Justice so this book is a good insight as to what I want. I am also a USAF veteran, and a lot of the things he points out about people and leadership are hurdles I saw while in the Air Force. This book is a good tool for anyone who wants an lesson about leadership vs. management.

As someone who has had a long career in law enforcement working in many areas, (Patrol, Juvenile officer, Detective, Range Instructor, Defensive Tactics Instructor, Baton instructor, taught college, and wrote several police tactics manuals), I am always interested in anything to do with police work. This is why when I saw this 113-page soft cover book, (Way of the warrior: An unflinching essay on modern law enforcement by Bernard Schaffer), on Amazon for a bargain price I decided to purchase it.

First off, this short book is more of a biographical sketch of the author, which is fine because he is relating his experience working the street, learning from fellow officers, and worked as a detective/investigator. Most of the advice and suggestions provided here are reasonable and valid; however, there are things he writes about that I do not agree with which I am not going to mention at this time.

Like the author, I have had the pleasure of working with good cops, but to be honest, there were a few real jerks who should have never been allowed to be police officers. In my opinion, there is nothing worse than a corrupt badge heavy cop who takes joy in humiliating people. Those are the officers who give the rest of law enforcement a bad name.

This volume covers the following: blue beginnings, stark realities, training and equipment, the true-blue line, Schaffer’s eight golden rules of criminal investigation, the unsolvable problem of police work, back to the start and a word about this edition. The author’s simple and easy to read narrative, for the most part, gives readers a glimpse into the inner thoughts of a retired police officer. New officers will benefit more than old timers reading this book.

I like the fact the author does not pull punches in his criticism of officers who did not take their job seriously. Police exist to protect its citizens from criminals and be of service in whatever way possible. In my opinion, it is all about having the right attitude, when working any kind of service job such as law enforcement. With the right attitude, anything is possible, but with the wrong attitude, nothing is possible.

In conclusion, I found this book a quick read and a book most police officers will benefit from reading.

Bernard Schaffer is a very interesting guy. His is an outstanding writer of both fiction & non. He is a police detective. He led another life as a child actor which he tells in another essay, "BJ Schaffer is Dead" about serving his sentence as a child star on TV. As I said: one interesting guy.

Here in this short essay, he tells of his journey to & some glimpses of, his life as a police officer. It is a great piece of writing & is both inspiring & honest. He tells it like it is. At least like it is for him. This is not a story of "action & adventure" (although it includes bits of both), but more just man telling about why & how he became a police officer and what it means to him. You feel it. At least I do, when I read it.

I say, in the spirit of full disclosure, I have become of fan of Schaffer's fiction & felt I had to to read this. I was fortunate that it was free when I got it in the Kindle Store. It is 99 cents right now. I had not yet read any of his other work yet when I got this. I say now that I have read this, and some of his other work, I would gladly pay a buck for this essay. More, for a collection of his essays, I would gladly pay $10 (and I really enjoy reading well-written essays/articles. Especially those taken from the writer's life).

It is a refreshing to read a writer who writes from his heart, while still maintaining his craft. I am sucker for good writing in almost any genre. Bernard J Schaffer is an excellent writer & storyteller, whether telling stories from his life or those he creates from whole cloth (or wherever he gets them from).

Here is an excerpt from his essay "BJ Schaffer is Dead" that gives a good taste of the flavor of his writing, & is a nice segue to Way of the Warrior (it is from the last paragraph of that essay, which you can find easily using any good search engine):

"Me? I'm a guy who worked at a gas station to make ends meet while I went to the Police Academy. I scrubbed toilets, worked landscaping and mopped laboratories late at night. At 34 years old, I'm a police detective who makes his living putting bad people in dark places. I'm a father to two children, and I can tell you that their love and admiration means more than the vacant adulation of the masses on any level."

Not only do I believe him, I feel I learn from him, both about writing & about life. That is valuable. Check out his work.
