On a cold December morning in New York City, a man is found dead in Central Park. There are no knife or gunshot wounds to his body and no signs of violence. But beside the body is a box containing a cracked vial. Suspecting he died from some sort of biological attack, a lab team screen the body. What they find is deeply unsettling and terrifying.

Seven months after he left the ARU, Sam Archer is now a 3rd Grade Detective in the NYPD's Counter Terrorism Bureau. However, not everything has gone as expected. Most of his new squad have welcomed him. Others haven't. But when he and the rest of his team are called in urgently and told of the situation all personal differences need to be put aside.

It's been confirmed the man in Central Park was killed by an unknown strain of a toxic pneumonic virus. Once inhaled, there is no chance of survival. The victim dies quickly, violently and in agonising pain. There is no antidote. No one knows where it has come from, who planted it in the Park and why. No ransom demands or threats have been received. Archer and his team are ordered to find out who was responsible, and to locate and secure any other strains of the virus that may exist. However, they are already almost out of time. Someone is intending to release more of the virus into the city within the next ninety minutes.

As they desperately search for answers, Archer and the rest of his team quickly discover that the cracked vial in the Park was just the start. They are also not alone in wanting to get their hands on the virus. There are others, people with far more sinister motives who are desperate to acquire the virus and who will kill anyone who gets in their way. As people around him start going down, Archer must battle to stay one step ahead in the race to find the toxic weapon before it is used again.

When he and his team finally realise the full horrifying extent of what they’re dealing with and the potentially devastating effects of its release, Archer must do everything he possibly can to stay alive and secure the lethal virus before many more people die.

However, he is already too late.

This is an easy one. Good story, well written and thought out, descriptive so we can 'see' the people and places, well developed characters, and a great pace to the book.

The Kindle version I read (a free copy from Amazon - thank you Tom) had just one mistake of note. In chapter 32 a woman is shot in the arm, but in the following chapter it is mentioned she is shot in the leg. A delight to read through a book with so few errors, which unfortunately seems so prevalent these days.

If you're a fan of this genre, you will want to check out this this writer/storyteller. I know I will be reading more from Tom Barber. A good read.

Not my usual type of book. I do like a good mystery and this book keeps you guessing all the way through.

This was my first Tom Barber book and it had me hooked from the beginning. I loved Sam Archer and will continue to read any books that he is a character. The plot takes off with an innocent man getting killed by a virus and then the special unit put together in the NYC police Dept. trying to find the people who have the other 5 vials of virus before more people are killed. The plot is well developed, the characters are strong and memorable. You get surprised about who some of the bad guys are. Definitely you are rooting for Sam to get through all the tangled trouble he finds himself in. This was offered as a free Kindle book on Amazon. Well worth the time to read and follow he other books.

What a great book. My second Sam Archer mystery and what a ride. Once you get the characters sorted out, it's non-stop action . I had to go back a few times to sort them out but then, back to the action. Oh, my aching head. There was enough killing and weird stuff going on to last right up until the end, and even that was great. These detectives and cops certainly earned their keep with all that was happening with the virus vials, the doctors, the neo-nazis, not to mention all the action taking place in 2-3 different locations. All this taking place just before Christmas! And in New York City. Kudos to Tom Barber for a great read. I'm ready for another Sam Archer thriller.

Enjoyed the story and beings that I grew up in the Pacific Nirthwest, I could identify the places and streets mentioned in the story. Like the writers way of writing, east to keep track of the characters and the story flows along nicely. What I don't like is the story ends when the story isn't finished. It's a series without any closure in the first book. Instead you have to purchase another book in order finish the story. I personally don't like that.

This was a rollercoaster ride from beginning to end. The storyline is all too plausible and frightening in the extreme. It’s non-stop action with Archer once again in the fray and with more broken bones as recompense for saving the world.

I have read 2 of the books in this series now. I have enjoyed the characters and the story lines have been creative and not predictable. In this age of easy Amazon publishing, there are a lot of dogs out there. The Sam Archer series as well as the David Wolf books are two of the best available. I enjoyed this book but a character is wounded with a 'through and through' and has to have the bullet removed. How did this slip by? I was surprised that Barber made such an obvious mistake and that no one caught it in editing. I am sorry to say that it knocked a whole star off my review. Whenever I think of the book, that is what I remember it for. I don't think I am the only one that caught it either. That passage in the book was marked as one of the most highlighted portions.

Another great read. I found myself holding my breath as I was reading. Then I would blow it out after I finished the sentence. Action all the way through. Outstanding Mr Barber.

Tom Barber does it again. This man knows how to write a story. I love the Sam Archer series and have read a lot of them, although not necessarily in the order they were written. This is a highly dramatic and action filled story which highlight snot only Sam Archer but the other members of the team. You just have to read it.

5.0 out of 5 stars The prior three books in the series were rippers!

Not sure why this would garner a one star. I've just downloaded it, but did purchase the prior three. All of which were terrific reads. I doubt the quality of writing, solid characters and tense compelling stories of the first three could possibly have bottomed out to a one star quality. Don't believe it's possible!
Ignore the other review. Try it and decide for yourself, I doubt you'll regret it.
One word one star reviews really irk me - in case you had not noticed!
